Throughout history, chocolate has been revered more for its medicinal qualities than its delicious taste. It has a calming effect on the brain, reduces fatigue and stimulates appetite. The Aztecs thought that if their warriors drank “nahuatl”, it would give them strength. The “precious cocoa beans” were also used as a currency. The origin of the tropical tree was the Amazon Headwaters; from there it moved to Central America (brought by god Quetzacoatl). Cocoa cultivation began by Mayan tribes in Central America, ca. 1500 BC. Mayas and Aztec attributed divine origin to the cocoa tree. “Xocatl” was made from the beans –this bitter drink was used for both ornate ceremonies and everyday life. It was flavored with vanilla, chili and annatto. The sacred beverage called “chocolatl” was consumed from golden cups.
